I did. It was easy. Mary had confused the chinchilla, a South American rodent, with the chihuahua, the popular pooch from Mexico. I was debating whether or not I should bring this to her attention when Mary abruptly changed the subject.

“Would you mind stopping at the market on the way home? I promised Denny I’d pick up some Ovaltine for him.

He goes nuts when we’re out of it. He really loves the stuff.”

“Holy Moses, that’s it Mary! That’s what killed Harrison!” In the excitement of the moment, I’d accidentally hit the panic button on the van’s remote control keychain, setting off the blaring horn alarm. It wasn’t the smartest thing to do in a hospital parking lot.

“What? He died from drinking Ovaltine?” Although she had to shout in order to be heard over the din, the amazement in Mary’s voice came through loud and clear. “Oh my stars. And here I’ve been giving it to Denny all these years.”

“Oh dear God, there’s nothing wrong with drinking Ovaltine,” I shouted back, fumbling to turn off the alarm.

“The man was allergic to nuts. Just being near them was enough to do him in. Nuts, Mary. That’s what Stella was trying to say. Think about all the changes made in the club’s menu. The new menu had no nuts, nowhere, no how.

It was healthy, all right, but for who? Harrison, that’s who.

If somebody figured out Harrison had a food allergy and deliberately fixed it so that he would unknowingly come in contact with nuts, then Stella could be right. Somebody could have killed her brother.”

“Hey, what’s going on out here? Turn that blasted alarm off and stop your caterwaulin’. In case you two didn’t notice, this is an official quiet zone and it’s against the law to disturb the peace.” The man yelling at us was a stern, humorless 106
